The Birth of Cinephilia from the Spirit of Amateur Science: Early German Film Societies

Research on film societies and cine-clubs has generally associated the phenomena with art cinema, often locating its origin in the cinephilic culture of interwar Paris. But associations for the study of cinema—and arguably cinephilia more broadly—emerged earlier and espoused multiple ideas about cinema’s potentials. This presentation examines some of the first film societies in the German-speaking world, dedicated largely to the study of scientific and educational film.
