A Day in the Life of a Harvard Student

As a Senior at Harvard College, I have settled into a wonderful routine, and I am happy to share with you all what my “typical” day is like.

7:45 AM - 9:00 AM Rise and Shine and Breakfast Time

I know this is quite early and rest assured that this is not a typical wake-up time for most college students. I am a morning person and find comfort in rising early to take-in the day. I leisurely get dressed, choose an outfit for the day after consulting the weather app, pack my backpack, and head out to enjoy the day. My first stop is the dining hall in Eliot House, my upperclassmen dorm. Eliot Dining Hall is wonderfully peaceful at this hour of the day. I give a nod to my fellow early risers and grab a seat by one of the beautifully wood-framed windows before heading into the servery to grab breakfast.

9:00 AM - 1 PM Prime Time for Productivity

By now one or two of my friends has joined me. After sharing a few laughs I get out my laptop, answer a few emails, and get started on an assignment or two. I find myself having the most energy to get work done early in the morning and so I spend the next two or so hours busily working on assignments before the lunch rush fills the dining hall with people and conversation.

1:00 PM - 3:00 PM African American Studies 137: Literature, Oratory, Popular Music, and the Politics of Liberation

After lunch I head to my first class of the day which examines works of fiction and music crafted during the 1960s and 1970s. We watch documentaries on popular figures like James Brown, read texts such as James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time, and engage in discussions on the importance of these figures and texts in periods of social change.

3:00 PM - 5:00 PM Worktime

I head over to the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid where I work as a Senior Coordinator for the Harvard Financial Aid Initiative. Then at 5pm, I head back to my upperclassman dorm for dinner and more fun times with friends.

6:00 PM - 7:00 PM History Senior Thesis Tutorial

I have my last class of the day which is a tutorial for my senior thesis. My senior thesis is a long research project that I will be working on throughout the course of my senior year. The thesis tutorial helps me to organize my research plan and writing.

7:00 PM -  11:00 PM Work and Fun with Friends

I return to Eliot House for the evening and spend time in the dining hall doing work and chatting with friends. The servery opens up at 9 to provide late night bites while students are getting homework done. At 11 PM I head upstairs and get ready for bed and that ends one day in my life as a Harvard student!
