Going Home for the First Time

When people think about transitioning to college, they are usually thinking of the process of moving-in to college and being new to the environment. Not a lot of people think about what the first time you go  home would feels like after settling into college. The first time I went home after my move-in was during Thanksgiving Break, and being home felt really different than before. Not only did I return home different, the dynamic of my home also changed a little while I was in college.

Both of my brothers took up the work that I usually did at home while I became more independent and got used to not having chores to do. Going away from home, I was afraid that it was going to be hard that I wasn’t going to be there to pick up my brother after school or make dinner for my brothers if my mother was working late. I should have had more faith because both of my brothers became so much more responsible while I was gone. Of course, they went right back to being lazy when I came back, but it still shocked me to know that they have been doing everything that I used to do and efficiently too!

Besides this growth in responsibility in my younger siblings, I found that there was more of a college awareness amongst my brothers and even my mother. My brothers and I, we have always been told that we have to do well in school and go to college because there would be more opportunities for us, but it’s never been an attainable goal until I actually started to apply to colleges and until I was actually accepted to Harvard of all places. Now that we’ve been through the entire process and know how it works, we are all so much more confident in how to navigate this process.

My youngest brother, after learning about the Harvard-Yale rivalry from his principal, is now very invested in it. He even kept up with the Harvard-Yale game! But even he is now talking about what kind of college he wants to go to despite my telling him to focus on starting middle school this upcoming year.
