Look What Yale Made Me Do - The Game 2017

Today’s a pretty big day on campus. Every year, Harvard and Yale face off in a football game that caps the Ivy League football season – our Super Bowl of sorts. As one of the oldest sporting events in the United States, it’s a game that’s steeped in tradition. One tradition, is that for the past nine years Harvard students have released a video in celebration of the good-natured, competitive spirit the game stirs up among students. This year I directed it with my blockmate!

On Harvard Time is a YouTube-based sketch comedy group that makes funny videos! It’s been one of the most rewarding extracurriculars I’ve done and I have had the time of my life within it. OHT has been making videos teasing Yale ahead of The Game since our winning streak began almost ten years ago. When Yale won the game last year, breaking the streak, we spiraled into a state of panic. What were we to do for next year’s video, when every video before was done with the expectation that we’d win? We found our answer in Taylor Swift.

As a club, we all decided that we had to address our loss in this year’s video. Many different versions, formats, and ideas were tossed around, but once we heard Taylor Swift’s Look What You Made Me Do, it became clear that a pop-song parody poking fun at our loss and at Yale was the way to go.

Once Ryan and I were selected as the directors for the video, we went through the script, plotted out our plan for film shoots, recruited and appointed members of our film crew, assembled our cast from among the pool of actors within the club, and we got to work! Over a two-week period we spent dozens of hours filming and re-filming, working with our video’s star to record her singing, overseeing the audio mixing process – getting the sound and music right; once we completed our shoot, Ryan began the process editing the video and polishing our special effects. We spent several nights in the editing room, adjusting moments, zoom-ins, lights – timing everything as precisely as we were able to maximize the comedy and hone in on our jokes!

Finishing this project was one of the most rewarding things I’d done in my time here! It was such a tremendous undertaking - it required intense amounts of focus, patience, and suffering through insanely chilly winds. Take a look and see what last year’s loss made us do (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-x25O8JxP0) Now, on to beating Yale and getting our winning streak back.
