‘Altered States: Sex, Drugs, and Transcendence in the Ludlow-Santo Domingo Library’ celebrates one collector’s quest to document the history of the human search for something beyond the limits of ordinary experience. Explore the social impact of the different paths taken in the hope of achieving transcendence—opium, cocaine, hallucinogens, marijuana, sex, and social protest—through a display of rare books, manuscripts, photographs, posters, prints, comics, and ephemera.
‘Altered States’ is on view Sept. 5 through Dec. 16, 2017.
Exhibitions at Houghton Library are free and open to the public during opening hours: Monday, Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and, Tuesday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
