News about Winthrop Faculty Deans

Dear Winthrop House community,

I am writing to let you know that Ronald Sullivan and Stephanie Robinson will not be continuing as your Faculty Deans when their term ends on June 30, 2019.

My decision not to renew the Faculty Deans was informed by a number of considerations. Over the last few weeks, students and staff have continued to communicate concerns about the climate in Winthrop House to the College. The concerns expressed have been serious and numerous. The actions that have been taken to improve the climate have been ineffective, and the noticeable lack of faculty dean presence during critical moments has further deteriorated the climate in the House. I have concluded that the situation in the House is untenable.

This is a regrettable situation and a very hard decision to make. I have long admired your Faculty Deans’ commitment to justice and civic engagement, as well as the good work they have done in support of diversity in their House community. I know that some of you are also proud of these efforts. I also know that some of you have been greatly helped and supported by your Faculty Deans in difficult situations. This decision in no way lessens my gratitude to them for their contributions to the College.

The College will share more information soon about interim leadership of Winthrop House as we conduct the search for the new Faculty Deans. Between now and June 30, the College will work with Deans Sullivan and Robinson to assist them with upcoming events, such as Commencement, housing, and financial administration.

I acknowledge that the announcement of this transition is happening during exam period, and I am sorry for any disruption. I wanted to share this information with you before students leave campus. I recognize there will be many different reactions among you to this news. I hope you will keep this in mind, assume the best of everyone, and treat each other with the belief that each of us supports a Winthrop community defined by dignity, trust, and mutual respect.

To answer any questions you may have, I, along with Dean Claudine Gay and Dean Katie O’Dair, will be at the Winthrop Dining Hall today (Saturday, May 11) from noon to 2:00 p.m. I welcome you to join us in discussing this transition.

Warmly,
Dean Khurana
