Secondary Fields

Pursue Multiple Interests and Options

In addition to your primary concentration, you may wish to include a secondary field in your plan of study. A secondary field can be an excellent way to pursue multiple intellectual interests. Unlike a student’s concentration, however, a secondary field is not required.

Be sure to discuss your academic goals with your adviser to make sure this option is right for you. You may find that your goals will be best met through more advanced work in your primary concentration or a broader selection of electives.

You may only choose one secondary field. Unlike a primary concentration, your secondary field must be chosen from our predetermined fields of study—it cannot be a special concentration.

Each department has unique requirements and notification deadlines for secondary fields. See the details on secondary fields in the Handbook for Students, and work with your adviser to make a plan of study that works for you.
