In Brief: The Adams House Pool Theater Enters a New Act

March 31, 2026

Renewal Modernizes Historic Performance Space

A new chapter is underway at Adams House. As part of the ongoing FAS Undergraduate House Renewal efforts at Harvard College, the Adams House Pool Theater—once a swimming pool—has undergone a grand revitalization of the student performing arts space.

Originally constructed from 1898 to 1902, the Pool was one of the defining features of Adams House before it was drained and closed in 1992. It was reopened the next year, converted into the Adams House Pool Theater, a distinctive venue that has since supported student performances.

Now, in collaboration with the Office for the Arts (OFA) and the Dean of Students Office (DSO), the renewed Adams House Pool Theater will continue its theatrical legacy with the addition of modern specialized equipment.

"The Adams House Pool Theater holds a special place in the College’s history as a vibrant and innovative performance venue,” noted Fiona Coffey, Director of the Office for the Arts at Harvard. “We are excited to partner with the OFA and the DSO to support a new era of creativity and student artmaking within this beautifully rejuvenated space,” added Adams House Faculty Deans, Mercedes Becerra and Salmaan Keshavjee.

Long known for its layered history and artistic spirit, Adams House has continually adapted its spaces to reflect student life. This latest renovation continues that tradition: preserving the character of the past while creating new opportunities for community, creativity, and connection. A major improvement is the addition of wheelchair access to all levels of the theater, allowing all members of the community to participate as performers and audience.

The renewed Adams House Pool Theater will offer an enhanced home for the arts within the House system and a compelling example of how Undergraduate House Renewal is modernizing campus spaces for current and future generations of Harvard College students.

The next act begins soon—don’t miss RENT, the first production in the renovated space, running April 1-5, 2026. Tickets are available at Harvard’s Box Office.
