There are moments in life when we wonder if the scenes we see in movies could ever happen to us. I did not think so—at least not until I joined the a cappella community on campus.
There’s something special about walking past the Annenberg basement late at night on weekdays and hearing a chorus of voices harmonizing, echoing through the corridors. The a cappella community at Harvard is spectacular and consists of talented groups of students, who come together to create something beautiful – no instruments, but with their voices, hearts and passions. There are several a cappella groups on campus, and each group has their unique music style, traditions, and personality. Whether it is pop, contemporary, ballads, or mashups, there is a group suited for every singer – it is just a matter of time before you find them.
I sing alto and mezzo for The Harvard Callbacks. When I first came to campus, I had no idea that within just a few weeks, these people would hold such a special place in my heart. They became family, and seeing them and spending time with them became one of the highlights of my school semester. Rehearsals never felt like a bore; they were simply time spent with like-minded people who loved doing the same thing I do—filled with music, a whole lot of laughter, and nothing but good vibes.
The Harvard Callbacks perform many gigs throughout the year, all around Boston, and at the Harvard Club in NYC. We also go on international tours every winter break, and previous destinations include the Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico, France, and more! The memories I’ve created during my travels are very special to me, and I enjoy exploring the world little by little with my favorite group of people.
Every semester, we perform at our biggest show, which is called Jam, and it is held at the famous Sanders Theatre on campus. This is a special performance as we usually share the stage with one or two other a cappella groups and perform the setlist we’ve worked on throughout the semester. What makes this evening truly memorable is the love we receive from our family and friends who all come out to support us. It is always such a special evening.

Being part of The Harvard Callbacks has taught me more than just how to harmonize—it’s taught me how to collaborate, listen, and, most importantly, how to find my best friends on campus. Whether it’s taking a brain break at Life Alive after grinding at Lamont, going to concerts together, or sharing matcha dates, they’re the ones who bring simple joy into my life every day.
If there is one thing I have learned from my few semesters at Harvard, it’s that college is full of unexpected opportunities. And sometimes grasping those chances could lead to something new and create the most rewarding experiences. Whether you sing for fun, professionally, or in the shower, there is always a place for you in this community.
