Dear Harvard College Students,

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the sudden death of our student Alexander Patel '18. Alexander was affiliated with Adams House and lived off campus.

Local authorities are examining the circumstances, but do not believe that foul play was involved. Out of respect for the privacy of his family, this is all the information we have to share at this time.

Moments like this affect every member of our community differently. Since we all absorb news like this and seek comfort in different ways, I encourage you to reach out to a family member, a friend, or someone you can talk to, such as a mentor or coach, as needed.

Such a sudden and unexpected tragedy evokes strong feelings even if you did not directly know Alexander. Many resources are available at Harvard to help every member of this community. Remember, your advisers stand ready to assist you at all times, including peer advisers, tutors/proctors, resident deans, Faculty Deans, and faculty.

Other resources we can offer you include the Chaplains Office (617-495-5529), which is open between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and is standing by for anyone who feels it would be helpful to talk. Counselors are available at Harvard University Health Services and can be reached at 617-495-5711.

We will continue to share any further information we can with the community as it becomes available to us.

This is a very painful time for those who knew Alexander, especially his family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of them. I ask that you each offer comfort to those around you who may be suffering during this time and need a shoulder to lean on.

Adams House will be opening their Lower Common Room at 8:00 p.m. this evening for all Harvard College community members who wish to join them.

Warmly,
Dean Khurana
