Lowell House is one of the 12 undergraduate residential houses at Harvard and offers many unique features, from its beautiful enclosed courtyards to a dedicated movie theater.
The house boasts two courtyards: a small courtyard and a larger one, both equipped with plenty of seating areas where you can work, catch up with friends, or relax with a good book while enjoying the weather. These spaces also include hammocks, a ping-pong table, and a volleyball net, making them perfect for leisure and recreation.
Like other houses, Lowell includes essential amenities such as a gym, dining hall, and library. The Lowell gym is fully equipped with treadmills, dumbbells, a rowing machine, and more. Just upstairs, there’s a room designated for stretching and meditation. Uniquely, Lowell features a squash court that doubles as a basketball court, as well as a dance studio located nearby. These facilities provide ample opportunities for staying active without leaving the House.
Lowell’s dining hall stands out for its bright yellow walls and hosts “High Table” dinners, where students can dine with faculty members at an elevated table. On Thursdays, the Resident Deans host Lowell Tea at the start of dinner, offering students a chance to enjoy warm tea, freshly baked goods, and meaningful conversations with peers and staff.
The house also has unique communal spaces. The Theater Room is a favorite for watching movies or screening sports matches. The Junior Common Room (JCR), adorned with vibrant wall art, serves as a versatile space for community events and study sessions.
Lowell is perhaps best known for its bells. Every Sunday afternoon, students can ring the iconic Lowell Bells. Just below the bells, the Lowell Bell Tower room offers a stunning view of the courtyards and serves as a quiet space for hosting events or working with friends.
